Dressed in a red cloak and crown feathers, with a shield in his left hand and a spear in his right, the Spartan warrior was one of the most capable infantrymen in the ancient world. The Spartan warrior considered his shield to be his life, and its loss meant defeat in battle, so the shield with the lambda sign on it was a symbol of honor.
