The idea that drove the creation of the Calavera watch was an existential one. We live in a fragile world but realizing that should not stop an artist from creating, and enjoying the process of creation, no matter how fleeting the result. And the point of origin of this idea for Konstantin were the calaveras, sugar skulls traditionally made in Mexico for the Day of the Dead, El Da de Muertos. The story of the Clown watches in the Wristmons collection continued in 2021, when Konstantin Chaykin presented his new watch, Grimaldi the Clown. Connoisseurs of theater history will no doubt recall that the words ‘Grimaldi, the Clown’ appear in the fictional biography of Joseph Grimaldi, Memoirs of Grimaldi, the Clown, edited by Charles Dickens.
Yes, Konstantin Chaykin devotes this watch to Joseph Grimaldi, a great artist and the first clown to turn the genre from a show of somewhat low standards into a true artform. Grimaldi enabled the clown, one of the standard characters of the traditional harlequinade, to come to the fore. In fact, he took centre stage. The image of the clown as created by Grimaldi, with his outrageous costume, face painted in white make-up with red triangles on the cheeks, accentuated black eyebrows and big, red lips in a mischievous grin, was carefully reproduced by Konstantin Chaykin on the dial of his Wristmon.
The design is important as a recognition of the insight of Grimaldi, inventor of the classic image of the clown. However, that’s not the most important thing. Standing above everything else is the incredible emotionality of the first Clown, and his ability to captivate the audience with his subtle acting and quick reactions. It is no wonder that his contemporaries remarked that the only way to appreciate the skill of Grimaldi was to see him live on stage.

Harlequin Ventuno, or Commedia dell’Alta Orologeria
What can we call the Wristmons collection, regularly replenished by Konstantin Chaykin since the first in the series, the Joker watch, was presented in 2017 One possible answer to this question is that it is a comedy of haute horlogerie. Indeed, the mask-like dials of the watches, equipped with Konstantin Chaykin’s Joker-indication, with hour and minute indicator discs and the trademark moon smile, turn the collection, in spite of the will of the master who created it, into a japery, a theatrical performance, a collection of diverse characters. In Italy, this is known as the commedia dell’arte, where the audience is amused, provoked and entertained by Pantalone, Brighella, Pulcinella, Columbina, and of course, among many others, the Harlequin, perhaps the most popular mask of the Venetian comedy theatre.
Without him, without his black half-mask, without his bright suit sewn with multi-coloured diamonds, without his inherent fun and naivety, along with his ability to get himself into difficult situations-and find a way out of course-it would be difficult to imagine a performance in the commedia dell’arte style. One day Konstantin Chaykin decided that without a Wristmon dedicated to this character, his comedy production of haute horlogerie would be incomplete, and so he announces the release of the new, limited edition, Harlequin Ventuno.
Why Ventuno Because we are now in the twenty-first year of the twenty-first century. In Italian, ‘twenty-one’ is ‘ventuno’-a number closely associated with gambling. Konstantin Chaykin believes he has chosen the perfect moment to release this model, since the Harlequin is characterized by precisely such qualities found in gamblers-passion, zeal and enthusiasm. Indeed, it is easy to get enthusiastic about this watch. The big-eyed face of the Harlequin Ventuno observes the world with joyful enthusiasm and a readiness to completely let loose and go for it, even if it is not encouraged in the present circumstances.

In the spring of 2017, independent watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin first introduced to the public the Joker watch, with its stand-out and unquestionably memorable anthropomorphic dial. Let there be light!
Joker ‘Fiat Lux’, a new character in the Wristmons collection, sheds another ray of light on Konstantin Chaykin’s grandiose project. The act of creation brings unpredictability into our lives, which is characteristic of any creative activity. The Joker watch, designed by Konstantin Chaykin as a realization of his idea of the immediate emotional impact of a watch with a face-shaped dial, turned out to be a much more significant event both in the career of the master and in the development of modern watch design than just another experiment by an independent watchmaker. In the first few days after the original Joker was unveiled at the Basel fair in spring 2017, this limited edition sold out, and it turned out that many watch connoisseurs around the world wanted to acquire the same or a similar watch. The usual approach would have been to release a series of slightly different models, for example versions with a different colored dial, or in gold, platinum etc., but Konstantin Chaykin was not very interested in such work, he preferred to create new watches. He therefore began to think about inventing new characters and equipping the watches with other complications, preferably ones that he had invented himself. In 2017, new watches with anthropomorphic dials, Clown and Pumpkin Head, were launched alongside the Joker, creating the Wrismons collection.

Konstantin Chaykin’s Joker became a sensation amongst watchmaking connoisseurs in 2017. In 2022, the master horologist decided to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the popular model by creating an entirely new Joker Five watch with a new design and a new complication.
When considering the new model, Konstantin Chaykin decided to use an open-worked dial similar to the unique Martian Tourbillon created for the Only Watch 2021 auction.
This design makes the main functional components of the Joker-indication module visible from the dial side. Incidentally, the master has redesigned this module: the smiling moonphase indicator has been replaced by a new day-of-the-week retrograde indicator: again, a broad, mischievous grin from ear to ear. The choice of titanium for the Joker Titanium Limited Edition was not accidental. The use of this metal in aviation, marine and aerospace technology has always brought clear advantages. The presentation of a new watch in Konstantin Chaykin’s Wristmons (“wrist monsters”) collection took place in August 2023, where he introduced the new character-Kolobok..
Kolobok is the title character in the Russian fairy tale of the same name. The tale’s hero is the Little Round Bun (more usual name of the story in English). He was baked by Grandma and Grandpa, turned out to be alive and quite restless, running away from home. During his journey encountered a rabbit, a wolf, and a bear who tried to eat him, but the hero outwitted them all and escaped with his life. The central theme of the fairy tale (which everyone in Russia knows) is Kolobok’s song: “I got away from Grandpa, I got away from Grandma, I got away from the rabbit…” At the end of the story the hero encounters a fox. In Russian fairy tales this figure is traditionally the most cunning, and this is no exception. The fox deceives the Kolobok and eats him.
Owing to talented illustrators over the ages Kolobok remains one of the most positive characters in Russian fairy tales. He is simultaneously cheerful, wily, and even a bit audacious, in other words, an ideal candidate for the Wristmons collection alongside Minions, the Joker, and Harley Quinn.
The international presentation of this latest work took place on August 29 as part of Geneva Watch Days, giving this hero known to everyone in Russia since childhood a breath of new life and a chance to talk about him in every corner of the globe. At all levels, from watch design, movement features to promotion, the master tells the story and conveys the personalities of the characters in modern language, creating his own “new take on a fairy tale” that allows it to be understood without words.

Watches dedicated to the symbolic creatures of the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac are one of modern watchmaking’s more beautiful traditions, enabling the timepieces to be imbued with the meanings and stories of Chinese mythology.
Konstantin Chaykin noted that the bull, in one form or another, appears in almost all mythologies of the world. Bulls were honoured (while also widely used in ritual sacrifices) in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, ancient Greece, ancient Rome and, of course, in China, where the bull is ranked second in the 12-year Chinese zodiac cycle.

THE FIRST WRISTWATCH TO WEAR THE GOLD ROYAL CROWN
Every fine watch should have its history. The “Mouse King 2020” watch, part of Konstantin Chaykin’s “Wristmons” collection, is no exception. The tale of this watch began during the Christmas holidays, when Konstantin Chaykin decided to read a bedtime story to his daughter. There could only be one choice-Ernst Goffman’s timeless “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” , without which the New Year period isn’t complete.
Since this is the first time in the history of watchmaking that a watch is crowned with a real royal “crown,” Konstantin Chaykin decided that the crown should be made of 18-karat gold and set with a real ruby. The imposing character of the “Mouse King” watch is emphasized by another extraordinary detail-a high-quality leather strap with an “ermine mantle” . According to the traditional Chinese 12-year zodiac cycle, 2020 will be the year of the metal mouse (rat), this is the first year of the cycle, so polished titanium, a metal whose color and texture resembles mouse fur, was a natural choice for the watch case.
A year earlier, Konstantin Chaykin had already released a special watch in honor of the Chinese New Year – a unique piece of “Unique Pig” , which was his first experience in this genre, which is very popular in modern haute horlogerie.
