Historic precedents
Precision timepieces from Glashutte that were used to determine one’s exact location on the high seas and on land were already world-famous in the 19th century. In addition to securely mounted marine chronometers, reliable portable timekeepers – so-called observation watches – soon became essential navigational instruments for captains, pilots and explorers.
Silver-grained dial
The dial, which has three different layers of lacquer, presents a fascinating, fine silver-grained surface with a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock and the power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock. Glashutte Original’s signature Panorama Date is positioned at 6 o’clock. While the finely drawn black railroad chapter ring frames the Arabic numerals, which are also black, the blued and polished hour and minute hands indicate the passage of time.
Contemporary movement
Beating within the Senator Observer is the manufacture’s own Calibre 100-14. To ensure maximum comfort the watch is equipped with a contemporary automatic mechanical movement, even though most traditional observation watches had manually wound movements. As a result, the “Auf/Ab” display on the dial represents a power reserve (the time remaining) rather than an indication of the running time (the time already elapsed).
